Hi friend! My name is Jessica, I am a family and portrait photographer based in Washington Dc. I am a Christian, wife, and identical twin. I love lilacs, candles, rainy days and honesty. I love finding joy in simple things.
Washington DC offers the most romantic and lovely locations for spring photo sessions. Maternity sessions are my favorite to photograph in the spring but I also enjoy family and outdoor newborn sessions. There are a few things to keep in mind when planning for your spring session.
Here is a list of my favorite locations for magnolia blossoms. Rawlins Park is such a hidden gem. This park is in Foggy Bottom near the White House. When in peak bloom, it’s absolutely breathtaking! There is easy parking all around the park with so many trees and lovely park benches.
Another location is the DAR building. This location has a wonderful magnolia tree that cascades over the white pillars. I love the mix of architecture and natural elements at this location. You do need to plan ahead and reserve a photography permit. To use the outside it is free but if you want to go indoors (they have a stunning library) there is a permit cost.
A third option for blooms is the U.S. Capitol. This location is so iconic for DC with wonderful architecture and there are several trees surrounding the Capitol lawn that bloom in the spring. I suggest afternoon or evening for this location to ensure you get the best light.
The Smithsonian Gardens offer many blooms all year round. The spring offers magnolias and tulips, the summer has beautiful greenery and the winter offers lovely architecture and pines.
If you are looking for cherry blossoms, Stanton Park is a wonderful option. Go at sunrise because all the local parents and nannies use this play area and it gets very busy. Cherry trees line both sides of the walkway creating a ceiling of blooms overhead.
Whether you come to DC just to visit in the spring or this is your home, I encourage you to take at least one early morning walk during peak bloom. It’s truly breathtaking.
