Hi friend! My name is Jessica, I am a family and portrait photographer based in Washington Dc. I am a Christian, wife, and identical twin. I love lilacs, candles, rainy days and honesty. I love finding joy in simple things.
There are so many family friendly activities to do in DC over Christmas. There is something special about the city over the holidays. The store fronts of always decorated lovely and the lights at night are my favorite. Here are a list of things you can do with your family each year.
Botanic Gardens. The flowers at the garden are lovely all year but they put on a wonderful poinsettia display over the holidays along with replicas of each memorial in DC made solely out of plants. They also set up a great train exhibit outside for the children featuring flowers and animals again made out of plants. Admittance and train exhibit are free.
Library of Congress. This has to be one of my favorite buildings in all of DC. They decorate the outside with large wreaths and drape garlands by the fountain, but inside is the real magic. The building itself is wonderful but they display a huge tree in the foyer that is several stories tall with gorgeous lights. If you go to the third floor they display a tree with books as ornaments representing each state. It’s always fun for kiddos to find the state they were worn in. You do need to reserve tickets online but they are free.
Georgetown Glow. They are taking a break this year but Georgetown hosts a terrific light display almost every year. It’s a wonderful walk for the family and it is free. It takes you through the side streets and along the riverfront.
City Center. This part of the city is always festive but particularly beautiful in the winter. There is an entire alley full of hanging snowflakes and a huge lit tree in the center. You can grab a hot cocoa at Dolcezza or Tatte Bakery on the corner. Just two blocks away is the Christmas Market. Full of local vendors and food, it’s a fun spot to walk through and maybe find that perfect present you’ve been looking for.
The White House tour. This is an event you will need to plan for months in advance but definitely worth it! You will need to request for a tour through your Member of Congress. The lights and tree displays are wonderful and each year has a fun theme.
I hope your family can enjoy the holiday season and make memories together in DC!
