Choosing Your Newborn Photographer

I know choosing your newborn photographer is a big decision. You will have these photos and memories for the rest of your child’s life and you want to make the best choice. Here are a few ways to ensure you choose the best newborn photographer for your family.

Choose a style you like. Each photographer has a shooting and editing style that is specific to them. For example, I like a mixture of posed and lifestyle images. This means I have multiple images of the baby swaddled on a white background and also images of parents casually holding their baby in the nursery or around their home. I prefer simple and organic images with a light edit.
Make sure they are consistent. Look through the photographer’s portfolio and see if their lighting and poses are similar ensuring you get the result you are looking for.
Do you like their personality? You will be spending time with this person over a vulnerable time in your life. Do you like a loud and fun personality or do you prefer a calm and soothing person? Jump on a phone call to ensure you enjoy talking with them and this allows you to voice your desires as well.
What do they have to offer? Some photographers have a studio and others offer in-home newborn sessions. For myself, I offer natural light, in-home newborn sessions. I love these for so many reasons! Depending on how the mother is feeling post-birth, staying at home can be such a relief. I had a c-section for my first baby and I remember thinking I could never have gotten dressed, packed everyone up and drove to another location. It felt like such a blessing to stay home with all my comforts nearby.
Are they responsive? Photography is an investment and it’s important to dialogue with someone who is attentive and has clear communication. If they are willing to answer your questions and if it’s easy to book a date with them will ensure that they continue that even after your session.
