How to Prep Your Home for a Newborn Session

I get asked many times from clients how to prep your home for a newborn session. Being a Washington DC newborn photographer I see so many unique homes as I work. Know that even if your home is in a remodel or a few things aren’t where you wish they were, we can always find a spot for photos.

1. Look at the light in your home. Paying attention to when your house gets the most natural light can be so helpful in how your images turn out.
2. Choose the room you want to photograph in. This will allow you to know when it the best time to schedule.
3. Clear away any distractions or clutter. Typically we photograph in the master bedroom and the nursery. Make sure there aren’t any extra items on the nightstands or on the floor.
4. Clean your mirrors. There is a wonderful trend of beautiful mirrors in nurseries right now which I love! You don’t need to bother dusting the room if you don’t have the time or energy. I remember my last few weeks before our son arrived, I wasn’t mobile enough to do any type of deep cleaning. But cleaning your mirror can really make a big difference.
5. Be open to moving to another room if the light is better. It can be the living room or kitchen, always chase the best light.
6. If you aren’t comfortable with your home or if it is very dark inside consider an outdoor session. DC offers so many lovely gardens and they make a wonderful backdrop for a newborn session. The Bishop’s Garden and the Supreme Court are two of my favorite spots for newborn sessions.
