Hi friend! My name is Jessica, I am a family and portrait photographer based in Washington Dc. I am a Christian, wife, and identical twin. I love lilacs, candles, rainy days and honesty. I love finding joy in simple things.
Have a friend visiting with her family this week and she was asking for suggestions on what to do if the day they visit is really cold. Washington, DC offers so many fun things to do with your family even if you visit during the winter months. Here are just a few of my favorite spots in the city. Some of these have admission fees but most of them are free.
Library of Congress -It’s hard to decide but this building is one of my top five favorite buildings in DC. It might be number 1. I particularly love the Library of Congress during the holiday season. It’s architecture is stunning anytime but it features a huge Christmas tree in the main foyer and if you go upstairs you find a tree solely decorated with books; very fitting. The bottom floor offers a fun kids area with an interactive and educational room. The admission is free but you do need to reserve tickets online ahead of your visit.
Botanical Gardens -This location is wonderful year round but once again the holidays are my favorite time to visit. It features an outdoor train exhibit and inside the Conservatory features poinsettias, holiday decor, and D.C. landmarks made from plants.
Hillwood Museum -This is a hidden gem in DC. A large estate with gardens, a house museum and even a greenhouse full of orchids. Hillwood’s spectacular gardens capture the vision Marjorie Post conceived when building the estate in the 1950s. She designed the gardens to flower in the spring and fall, when she was in residence at Hillwood. Today, they offer something beautiful in every season.
City Center -City Center is a favorite spot anytime of the year. They have hanging decor on the side streets that change with the seasons. Snowflakes in the winter to beach balls in the summer. I love sitting in the Tatte Bakery on a cold day enjoying the lights (Christmas tree in the winter) while sipping hot cocoa.
Museum of Natural History -this is a great museum for children. On the top floor there is a butterfly pavilion where you can walk into and see the butterflies. There is a fee to get in but on Tuesdays it is free admission.
Favorite Restaurants:
If you are visiting DC in the colder months I hope you visit one of these locations. It’s amazing what DC has to offer anytime.
Museums. Architecture. Art. Culinary Experience.
