Hi friend! My name is Jessica, I am a family and portrait photographer based in Washington Dc. I am a Christian, wife, and identical twin. I love lilacs, candles, rainy days and honesty. I love finding joy in simple things.
I’v been photographing newborns for over ten years. I’ve learnt so much over that time and it’s super helpful to know these basic safety tips when you are a few photographer or a parent looking to hire a photographer yourself.
CPR training -Does your photographer know CPR? I took a newborn CPR class several years ago and it was extremely helpful.
Client Contract -This is a safety measure for you, as a photographer but also for the client (new parent) as well. This also allows you both to know what to expect during the process.
Photography Insurence -I photograph many families with toddlers and the toddler stage is very curious. I’ve had a toddler quietly unpack my camera lens when the parents and I were distracted with photographing the newborn. I wasn’t alarmed because I had insurance on all my gear. If any piece gets dropped or damaged, I (or my client) don’t need to worry.
Stay Healthy -I shower and make sure I am healthy at all times. No sniffles and I try to get plenty of sleep. When I enter my client’s home I remove my shoes and ask to scrub my hands in the closest washroom. Anything to stop spending germs in their home.
Posing Baby -Make sure their neck is in a safe position. If it is too far front or back, it blocks their airways. Having a professional photographer who knows how to pose a newborn is very important and even is aware if a baby is showing signs of stress or not.
*Tip -if you need to remove a pacifier, gently press on the baby’s forehead and they will release the pink.
*Tip -if the baby’s fists are tight, they are hungry. If they are relaxed, their tummies are full.
Newborns let you know in various ways if they are happy or what they many need. Having a professional newborn photographer who is away of these signs can make your newborn session stress free and safe.
