How to take your own Headshot
We all have needed a new headshot for some reason or another and most times we need one, it’s last minute. But as a business owner it’s key to showing up on your social media so clients can get to know you and make a connection by seeing your face. Getting a fresh headshot every 2-3 months is a great idea. Here are a few simple steps to getting a new one by yourself.
- Place your camera on a tripod. I use this sturdy tripod but here is a cheaper version that would work too.
- Set your camera to timer mode. (I use 10 seconds so I can get into place) You can also set it to “live” mode so the camera will track you and focus well.
- I use this remote to trigger my camera. This is only $9 and it’s so helpful!
- *Be sure to set your aperture to a higher number so it keeps more things in focus. When you shoot too wide, it can cause your photo to be blurry. Make sure you are in the shade so there isn’t any sun flare.

After completing these exact steps at home, here’s a series of how some of my shots turned out. Shot on a solid-colored wall in my home office in the early evening, the natural light used was from a large window that was to my right. I ended up going with the photo at the end because I thought the angle and facial expression suited me best. Standing at an angle and slightly tilting your head is a universally flattering pose.
