The past two years I dove deep into understanding SEO. It felt so intimidating and overwhelming to me, yet I knew I needed to know more to further grow my business.

What even is SEO? SEO is how your future clients find you on Google. I am a Washington, DC Newborn Photographer and so when someone searches for that term, I’m hoping to come up in their search. This is called “ranking” on Google.

What are ways to increase your SEO? First be sure to title your photos correctly on your blog or website. When I export my images from RAW to JPEG, I always change the title too. No one is looking for “007-JPEG”. You need to be specific when adding titles to your images. I would name my files: Washington DC Newborn Photographer or Washington DC Family Photographer.

Be sure to always add geotags as well. “Geo” means where you are based geographically so I use Washington DC for most of my tags. This is also helpful for clients searching the area and may happen to find your business.

I used to title my blog posts with my client’s names. I stopped doing this for two reason. First, not using their names preserves their privacy. Second, no one is searching for the Woldorf Family in google. They are wanting to find a newborn photographer or maybe a family session with a navy and white color scheme. So when I title my blog posts I try to imagine I am searching for something on Pinterest that I can describe for my images. For example: outdoor newborn session, family session at the Capitol, or maybe a casual at-home newborn session.

If you start implementing these simple strategies into your business you will make big strides in ranking on Google and helping your clients find you.
