As a Washington DC Maternity and Newborn Photographer and Mother of two, I know it can feel daunting to schedule a maternity session. Pregnancy and motherhood is such a beautiful and sometimes unexpected journey. But here are a few Tips for Planning Your Maternity Session to ensure it’s as smooth and stress-free at possible.

1. When is the best time to schedule your maternity session? Late in your second trimester or early in your third trimester is best. Your bump is showing but you haven’t reached the phase of being too uncomfortable. I recommend no later than 36 weeks. This also ensures that you get your maternity session in just in case your baby makes an early arrival.
2. What time of day should you schedule? I always recommend booking your maternity session early in the day. There are multiple locations in DC that I prefer at sunrise for the best lighting anyway. In my last trimester my feet would tend to swell by evening. Scheduling your session in the morning offers you the most comfort and energy.
3. What are the best locations for a maternity session? I love softer and dreamer locations for maternity session. Beautiful flower gardens or lovely architecture make a maternity session even more meaningful.
4. What should you wear? I love when mothers choose a long dress. This adds an extra feminine touch especially if it has a flowing skirt and lovely style. HERE and HERE are two options that are wonderful options.
